Editors Note: We’re welcoming a new author to theSportsGeeks.com: Brian. He’s a huge NFL fan and will be writing at The Sports Geeks from now on, but be sure to check out some of his previous work here: http://pursuitofperfection10.wordpress.com/.
How’s it going, The Sports Geeks-Nation? My name is Brian Parker and I’ll be making some story contributions to the site; generally stories about the NFL, but I’ll be sure to chime in on other sports as the need arises.
As a first post to this site, I wanted to give the 2009 NFL season a retrospective look based on thoughts I had during my recent viewing of NFL Film’s production of the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl XLIV Champions video. As anyone who has ever seen an NFL Films production is aware, the production quality is excellent and you also get the opportunity to hear on-the-field audio that the broadcast networks don’t focus on during any given game.
And so, here are the major points that came to mind as I watched this season’s film:

Been awhile. Sorry. I got stuff to do. I’d say, “you do too”, but clearly you don’t, as you’re most likely avoiding any actual work by reading this column. Time spent doing work is a pretty valuable thing, yet you’ve deemed reading this even more valuable, and I appreciate that. With these lofty expectations in mind, I’ll try to match your demand with some decent supply.
I can usually stomach Colin Cowherd’s radio show for about 10 minutes at a time. I’m a big fan of talk radio (mostly sports, with a bit of politics mixed in as long as it’s not idiotic), and he tends to be my only option around 12:30-1:00ish, which is usually when I’m heading back to the office from my lunch hour. When the divorced egomaniac isn’t busy giving life advice or kissing the very ass he verbally kicked three days ago, I love his “Spin the Globe” segments, where he tries to hit most of the relevant sports in season for a few minutes at a time. It’s quick, intelligent, informative, and easier to digest than a long winded rant. With this in mind, I’ll try to keep a few of these mixed in during the spots between the full length features.

Well, it’s over. Football season is over. Can I hibernate until September? It’s the day after Super Bowl XLIV, so let the over-analysis begin:

One day, Congress will recognize that The Super Bowl is a national holiday. Here at The Sports Geeks, we know you’ll be celebrating. But every year, fans face a dilemma.
Who should I be rooting for?
In any given year, most fans’ teams are out golfing by the time the Super Bowl rolls around. And for some fans, it’s OK to watch a game with no rooting interest. They can just appreciate the entertainment of a well-played game. And expensive commercials.
But what about the fans who need a little us vs. them to really get into the game?
Well, I’m here to help you find yourself. Because the Super Bowl, like any other holiday, is a time for introspection, self-reflection, and discovery. (more…)

Yes, it’s that time of year. Fantasy football players who own Peyton Manning are losing sleep every night. The Colts have done all they can do, and the threat of Jim Sorgi is lingering. Is resting your starters when you have home field advantage really the best thing to do? Every year we hear: “save it for the playoffs”, “keep everyone healthy”, “our goal is to win the Super Bowl”. While those are seemingly good reasons, there’s not any statistical evidence to suggest that resting the final week(s) improves playoff chances. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
In years past, it’s not been such a huge issue. Normally, Indy has a loss or two going into the last week, and with nothing to gain, Peyton Manning and the other star players are in for a series or two, and then spend the rest of the game on the sidelines. This season, for the first time ever, two teams, the Colts and Saints, are 13-0. The Saints are showing no signs of folding; coach Sean Payton said “we’re going for it.” But, for the Colts it looks like business as usual. Rumor has it the starters will play at least a majority of the game this week, although all bets are off when it comes to the last two games of the season. Former coach Tony Dungy, now an NBC analyst, insists that the Colts will stick to his old strategy, ending any chance of an undefeated season. Whatever happened to playing to win the game? Where’s Herm Edwards when you need him?
