An Open Letter to the NHL

10.07.09 7:01 pm by Pat

Dear National Hockey League,

I am writing this letter to express concern over your well-being and to offer a few suggestions.  I feel that you are driving a good product into the ground and doing a horrible job with your public relations.  Very few people seem to care about the NHL, and even fewer follow it consistently.  Many elements of your game should be extremely appealing to a lot of people in today’s society, but for many reasons it isn’t.

NHL Western Conference Preview

10.06.09 3:56 pm by Adam

Here’s the second half of Adam‘s western conference preview:

Western Conference:

Colorado Avalanche – This once proud franchise is struggling to find it’s way and will have to do so without superstar Joe Sakic, who retired during the summer. The Avs also are without Ryan Smyth. They have a rookie head coach and a questionable goalie and it should be a very long season in Colorado. The Avs do not sniff the playoffs.

Minnesota Wild – Jacques Lemaire is out as the head coach and a new offensive style should start to take place. The Wild were a boring team to watch last season. Martin Havlat replaces the departed Marian Gaborik as the scoring threat, can Havlat stay healthy? This team was 9th in the conference last year and they will again be in the pack for the last playoff spot come April.

NHL Eastern Conference Preview

10.05.09 4:36 pm by Adam

Editor’s Note: This post was written by Adam over at Canada Sports Guy. He’ll be bringing his NHL insight here from time to time. Look for part 2 of this post tomorrow afternoon.

As the NHL gets ready to open the 2009-2010 season, each team has questions that need to be answered. Here is a preview of the eastern conference teams:

Atlanta Thrashers – The Thrashers have added some key players in Nic Antropov and Pavel Kubina to go along with their superstar, Ilya Kovalchuk. This team should have no trouble scoring goals. The problem will be in goal and whether or not Kari Lehtonen can keep the puck out. If he is playing well, this team will be dangerous.

Boston Bruins – Did the Boston Bruins hit their ceiling last season when they had 116 points in the regular season? The Bruins are close to the salary cap and lost Phil Kessel because of their cap issues. They still have the best defense corps in the Northeast division, that should keep them in the top three seeds come playoff time.

Buffalo Sabres – Inconsistency was the big problem for the Sabres last season. They just could not build that momentum, or at least contain it. The strength of the Sabres was their scoring and power play and it will remain so this season. If Tim Connolly can stay healthy, they will make a serious push for the playoffs. The Sabres were in 6th place in the conference as late as February.

Brett Favre, And The 5 Other Most Despicable People in Sports

9.15.09 4:28 pm by Will

The start of the NFL Season means the continuation of the unbearable Brett Favre saga. This terrible NFL Favre-season (a new synonym for offseason) has reminded me of something. I really freaking hate Brett Favre. I hate the way his name is not phonetic. I hate the fact that John Madden and Peter King verbally fellate him at every opportunity. I hate the way he squandered some really Packers teams because he needed to be a gunslinger and throw off his back foot. I hate that he needs to be the center of attention at at times. I hate the fact that he beat the Pats in Super Bowl XXXI. I hate the fact that he and Dustin Keller were two of the main reasons that my team didn’t make the playoffs this year. But most of all, I hate the utter disrespect he is showing towards Green Bay Packers fans, the best fans in the NFL. The citizens of Green Bay own the team, and agreed to a sales tax increase to renovate the stadium in 2003. Not only do they commit to the team financially, but they pack the stadium, which has sold out every game since 1960. The time that would be spent on the Packers season ticket waiting list if one added themselves today is estimated by some to be 100 years. Lambeau Field has been lauded for its amazing game-day atmosphere, rated by Sports Illustrated as being the best place to watch an NFL game. As much as these people are Packers fans, they were arguably even bigger Brett Favre fans. Whenever you would see a shot of fans going into Lambeau, at least 70% of those who wore jerseys had #4 on their back. He was immensely revered.
